Quantachrome Instrumentís contract lab, LabQMC, offers analytical services for measurement of particle size distribution by laser light scattering (diffraction) for particles in the range from 40 nm to 2,500 um. Powder samples can be analyzed as received (dry) or in liquid suspension. Liquid suspension particle size analysis requires much less sample than a dry analysis. Analysis can be performed in water or isopropanol, with or without the addition of surfactants and other dispersing agents and with or without ultrasonic dispersion. If you have an established protocol, please submit it with your sample(s). Our laboratory personnel are happy to provide advice and to discuss any limitations or questions that might arise.
Why is Particle Size important?
Particle size is important for many reasons. In the absence of porosity, the surface area is greatly affected by the particle size. The smaller the particles, the higher the reaction rate for the material. Particle size also affects the dissolution rate in the same way: the smaller the particles, the faster the dissolution. Particle size is also related to the packing density of the material and small changes in particle size distribution could affect the materials ability to pack appropriately or as expected. Finally, sedimentation or suspension of the particles is affected by particle size.
