Surface Area Measurements
Surface Area Lab Services
Quantachrome Instrumentís contract lab, LabQMC, offers analytical services for BET surface area measurements by gas adsorption. Surface areas in the range from 0.0005 m2/g to no known upper limit can be accurately measured. Surface area is typically calculated from nitrogen adsorption measurements, or, in the case of very low surface areas (less than 1m2 total available area), by krypton adsorption, both at liquid nitrogen temperature. Measurements can also be performed with argon at liquid argon temperature, if desired. Multi-point BET measurement or single-point BET measurement are available. Vacuum-volumetric techniques are used for the measurements unless flow techniques are requested by the customer.
Samples are pre-treated under vacuum or inert gas purge, usually at some elevated temperature. Outgassing conditions are specified by the customer or can be selected by our team of experts based on material type.
STSA carbon black surface area, Langmuir surface area, and t-plot micropore area analyses are also available.
Why is Surface Area important?
Because of its simplicity and straightforward applicability, the BET theory is almost universally employed for specific surface area measurements. For a material that will interact with its surroundings in its final application, an understanding of how much area is available for interaction and reaction is crucial. Surface area is often linked to performance in materials such as catalysts, sorbents, and pharmaceuticals, among others. Raw material, synthetic, or even manufacturing changes may lead to changes in surface area and subsequent material behavior. These changes can be easily detected using the method of gas adsorption coupled with BET theory.
Our laboratory personnel are always happy to discuss your application in greater detail to select the best characterization method to solve your problem or answer your material question. In addition our expertise does not end with the measurement. Results can also be discussed with our scientific experts in the context of your application any time after the analysis has been completed.
Surface area measurements are often used in the following industries:
